Procalcitonin, ProCT, is a precursor of calcitonin. Calcitonin is
involved in serum calcium regulation and prevention of calcium loss.
During bacterial infection, conversion to calcitonin is interrupted and
high levels of ProCT are secreted in many tissues. It is a
highly-specfiic marker for severe infection.
